This accredited course provides participants with the essential knowledge and practical skills to confidently assist someone experiencing a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) and be prepared for asthma emergencies until medical help arrives.

Through this accredited training, participants will learn how to recognise the signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis and respond appropriately, including the correct use of an EpiPen® (adrenaline auto-injector).

It will also provide participants with the knowledge and skills to identify asthma risks, recognise signs of an asthma episode, and respond appropriately using asthma action plans and reliever medication.

This course is particularly relevant for teachers, childcare workers, parents, carers, and community members responsible for children or individuals at risk of severe allergic reactions.

Anaphylaxis

Anaphylaxis is the most severe and potentially life-threatening form of an allergic reaction. It must be treated as a medical emergency, requiring immediate first aid and urgent medical attention.

  • Understand the difference between an allergic reaction and anaphylaxis
  • Recognise the signs, symptoms, and risk factors of anaphylaxis
  • Learn how to assess and manage an anaphylactic emergency
  • Apply appropriate first aid treatment using EpiPen® or AnaPen® auto-injectors
  • Follow established Action Plans and communicate clearly with emergency services

 

Asthma
  • Develop a proactive Asthma Risk Minimisation and Emergency Management Plan
  • Identify common asthma triggers in the environment
  • Establish preventive measures and clearly defined emergency response procedures
  • Ensure access to reliever medications and asthma action plans
  • Identify the signs and symptoms of an asthma episode
  • Understand the potential progression to a life-threatening asthma attack
  • Assess the situation considering the casualty’s condition, environmental risks and physical hazards, the most appropriate immediate response and implement appropriate control measures to ensure safety
  • Communicate calmly and effectively with the casualty
  • Locate and prepare essential equipment
  • Communicate vital information to emergency services clearly and promptly
  • Follow workplace debriefing and reporting procedures
  • Recognise and respond to anaphylaxis and severe allergic reactions with confidence.
  • Administer EpiPen® or AnaPen® auto-injectors safely and effectively.
  • Identify and manage asthma triggers and respond appropriately to asthma episodes.
  • Develop and follow action plans to keep individuals safe in any environment.
  • Communicate calmly and clearly with casualties and emergency services.
  • Apply practical first aid skills that protect children, adults, and community members until professional help arrives.
